We Fought Back

Teen Resisters of the Holocaust

Book by Allan Zullo

During this time, known as the Holocaust, the Jewish people and other people that the Nazis did not like in Europe were mistreated. Some were sent to concentration camps or labor camps. 6 million Jews and 11 million others were killed by the Nazis. Some teenage and young adult Jews joined the Partisans to fight against the Nazis.

Partisans are a group of people who fought against Nazi Germany during World War II.

Selim Sznyncer is a 16 year old Jewish boy who is hiding in a dugout with other Jews. He and his brother leave their city for the woods after their parents are killed. Selim and his brother, Musio, are a part of many different Partisans groups. Selim and his family live in New York now.

Without these brave young Jewish boys and girls, the war would have gone on much longer. Their bravery and courage make people marvel at them. They suffered terrible abuse and yet showed great strength.

Sarah (Sonia) Shainwald is a 14 year old Jewish girl. She and her family are put in a work camp. She soon escapes and hides in the woods with her family. She and her family join a camp for Jews and other refugees. She is made a medical assistant and helps the doctor there. Sarah, a grandmother and widow, lives in Marin County, California today.

Frank Blaichman is a 16 year old Jewish boy who lives in Kamionka, Poland. Soon the Germans move into Poland. They announce they will move all Jews into an enclosed place they call the Ghetto. Frank escapes and runs into the woods where he meets other escaped Jews. His camp soon grows to over 100 people. One of the camp's main jobs is to find German informers or spies. Frank now lives with his wife and 2 children in New York.

Martin Friedman is a 17 year old Jewish boy posing as a monk. He flees his town after Germans invade and hides in a monastery. Martin soon leaves the monastery. He becomes a Partisan and goes on many missions. He then leaves the Partisans and joins the Czechoslovakian Army. Today, Martin is married with 2 children and lives in Sherman Oaks, California.

This book is a collection of seven different stories about Jewish teenagers joining the Partisans.

Paul Strassman is a 15 year old Jewish boy. He has joined the Partisans to escape the Germans. Paul narrowly avoids being killed by the German police, because he is not at home when they come to take his father. Paul eventually gets out of the war alive and goes to America to start a new life. Paul and his family now live in Connecticut.

Chonon Bedzowski is a 17 year old Jewish boy. He is in a labor camp with his family. He and his family escape and join the Bielski Brigade. The Partisan camp has hundreds of Jews living there and an impressive fighting force. Germans try to invade the camp. The entire Partisan unit flees. They return and make a new Jewish community. The Bedzowski family makes it through the war and Chonon lives in Canada with his wife and 3 children.

Romi Cohn is a 15 year old Jewish boy. He has fled his city to get a better life. He helps Jewish families pay their rent. He soon joins a Partisan unit serving as a scout. He has tamed a horse, which means he has a very high rank in the Partisans. After the war, Romi became a Rabbi and construction business owner. He lives in New York with his wife.
