History of "Hot Wheels"

This is the current 2014 flat logo design

- The Yellow-White gradient has been replaced with solid Yellow text

- Fire decals have been removed

- More like classic logo's - Old curve, white outline and text style

  • First 16 Hot Wheels Die-cast toy cars introduced by Mattel

  • Convieved to be more "tricked-out" toys than main competitor Matchbox (more realistic

  • 11/16 toys were designed by Henry Bentley Bradley

  • The first production line of these cars is called "The Sweet Sixteen"
  • Thermal Colour Change was introduced - car's changed colour if they were submerged in hot or cold water

  • Crash Panel Vehicles were introduced - contact with various car parts, such as sides and front, would pop open panels
  • New slogan - "Go With the Winner"

  • Apart from the introduction of new product designers from Ford, first few years were slow for Mattel as for a lack of new designs

  • 1974 - introduction of the Flying Colours line helped to revitalise sales- designs with reflective decals and tampo-printed paint designs
  • Original 16 were a resounding success, forcing change in designs from competitors fomr 1968 onwards

  • "Show & Go" series was released, first original designs by Mattel

  • Early versions of the "Beach Bomb" (VW Bus Replica) of this series didn't work in testing with track pieces, thus was replaced with modified production version

  • This early version is the Holy Grail for collectors, now valued at $70,000 - $120,000

More realistic look adopted - addition of fire decals inside the logo as well as a skeumorphic graphic design - this having the biggest change out of most of the logos having removed the Mattel logo

Brighter red used once again, logo heightened slightly. Also trademark is encorporated into Hot Wheels text instead of next to Mattel logo

Darker shade of red, updated Mattel logo and removal of 'Fastest Metal Cars in the World!' Slogan
