This study aimed to investigate the effect of SMS on university students’ vocabulary learning and retention. The findings approved the usefulness of SMS in this regard. Using SMS can help them learn and retain large number of vocabulary items they are encountering inside and outside the classroom.
The results of this research showed that cell phones are an interesting and innovative way for learning a new language. Teachers can change their methods and move toward more learner-oriented method. Learners also have more opportunity to listen to their audiobooks and improve their listening comprehension.
The research focused on pedagogical implication for language teachers use SMS as a useful way to help their students to retain vocabularies in their long-term memory.
The research is focused on the experimental group receiving instruction through cell phone based audiobooks outperformed the control group on their listening comprehension.

a) Participants
Use Academic Word List, AWL and vocabulary test.
b) Instrumentation
c) Procedure
1. The participants received some vocabulary items selected from among almost the head words of the last 7 sublists of the AWL.
2. The participants received the word definitions as well as example sentences on a regular basis two times a week via SMS.
3. They were assessed each session by the instructor in class to see how they had learned the vocabulary items.
4. During the same period and same session, they were asked to look up 10 words in a dictionary and learn them.
5. At the end of the experiment, they were administered a vocabulary test to assess the effects of instruction and assessment.

A group of EFL learners studying at Zaban Amooz in Mahabad, Iran.
b) Instrumentation
Use a questionnaire, audiobooks and OPT test.
c) Procedure
1. The participants were randomly assigned to two groups; females and males.
2. 'Study Listening by Tony Lynch (2007)' was taught for 16 sessions.
3. The females come to class even days, while males on odd days from 5pm to 7pm.
4. During the whole term, the participants were introduced to different audiobooks.
5. At the end of the term, the same MALL questionnaire was given to the participants to see how much their attitudes had changed and how helpful they found MALL to be.

The research was attempted to compare the effect of cell phone based audiobooks versus its traditional counterpart that is CD-ROM based audiobooks.
