Some Basic Background

Cabrillo was born on March 13, 1499. Yet his earlier life and childhood is a mystery. Cabrillo is a very skilled navigator and explorer yet failed to reach Asia. He was known mostly for being the first European to set foot on present-day California. He mostly stayed along the coast. He was sent by the Spanish governor.

Special Memorials and Monuments about Cabrillo

After Cabrillo's death, many Mexicans and Americans honored him by naming places after him, and making statues and monuments of him too. There is a "Cabrillo Monument" in San Diego California. Under the Monument, here is a plaque honoring Cabrillo made in 1935 by the Portuguese ambassador to the United States. There is a beach in San Pedro, California which is named "Cabrillo Beach." The Cabrillo beach is famous for playing volleyball, swimming, scuba diving, and surfing. There are schools, collages, and universities named after him. Also there is a Aquarium named "Cabrillo Marine Aquarium."

What were some obstacles?

On the way to Asia, they ran out of beans and pickled beef on the ship so they had to live on sea biscuits. Many sailors had poor diets and many died of hunger. On the island of San Miguel, Cabrillo broke his arm and it soon infected. Many people believe that is the reason he died later on. Another obstacle is that England ships raided their galleons and ships for Cabrillo's treasures.

Cabrillo was known for being the first European to discover the coast of California. Also known as the west coast of North America. He also found some islands with a few indians living on them. But they never made any settlements on any of the islands.

Dates Cabrillo lived and traveled?

Cabrillo was born on March 13, 1499 in Montalegre Portugal. He died of his earlier injuries on January 3, 1543 on the island of San Miguel at the age of forty-four. Cabrillo was known for exploring the coast of California on behalf of the Spanish empire. On June 27, he set out from Navidad, Mexico with three ships: the 200 ton galleon and flagship San Salvador, the Smallest La Victoria, and the San Miguel. All not very well built. On September 28, Cabrillo anchored on a "good port" which is now called San Diego.
