Food for Thoughts - School, Peers, Reference Groups.

Television: A different kind of Socialization Agent

Questions for Thought - Family

Think about it...

  • It is clear that TV has become a major agent of socialization but unlike all the others it does not involve actual interaction with real people.
  • TV is a one sided process in which an individual cannot interact with the agent, only able to retrieve information as a passive viewer
  • Effects on children - distinguishing fantasy vs reality
  • Do you believe people in our society behave differently due to the role they are in? Do you conform to social influences at your workplace?
  • What are some examples of particular jobs that require certain actions?
  • What social influence is shown in the religious setting? What are the similarities and differences between religious practices and beliefs?
  • In what ways do parents demonstrate that they are trying to socialize their child?
  • What childhood story did you find to play a role in socializing your life? Morals or social norms enforced?
  • Do you anticipate raising your own children any differently?
  • Schools - Consider the impact school has had on you... how has the school system altered your behaviour?
  • Peers - Increases in importance as child matures into adolescence years. Who are your friends?
  • Reference Groups - Name some more socializing agents that are important to you? How do they affect your behaviour?

Considerations:

  • Does television than socialize children to be violent???
  • Stereotyping enforced on television???
  • Identity Crisis - the period during adolescence when an individual is trying to answer the questions: "Who am I?" and "Where am I going?"
