Cons of Block Scheduling

mR.vANDENBOOM- AP @ MHS

Cons of Traditional Scheduling

  • Students may become bored easily if the teaching methods are too teacher focused.
  • Less total class time (30 hrs. less) because 180 days of a traditional 55-minute period amount to 165 hours while 90 days of a 90-minute period total 135 hours.
  • Most students tend to not like the fact of going to the same classes in the same order every day.
  • It makes students have shorter time for due dates and more work throughout the day.
  • a seven period day means students have seven classes to prepare for, seven textbooks to carry, and possibly seven homework assignments. On some days, students will have multiple tests to study for, requiring the student to perform a balancing act in order to manage his/her schedule effectively.

Pros of block scheduling

Block Scheduling VS. REGULAR SCHEDULING

  • students who need more explanation with from a teacher or need more one on one time will be able to receive that due to the longer classes.
  • There are 2 days between each class so students have more time to do homework and study for test.
  • There are only 4 classes periods during the day and longer lunches
  • Block scheduling: There are A/B days that switch off every day and week. Each day students have only four classes instead of seven, and the classes are about 30 minutes longer.

pros of regular scheduling

suRVEY AND INTERVIEW CONCLUSIONS

  • Traditional: 7 classes each day for roughly one hour
  • students have daily contact with each teacher and provides more in class time for students.
  • Students who suffer from attention deficit disorder and other disabilities are better able to focus during shorter periods and benefit from daily teacher-student interaction.
  • Students immediately establish a pattern to their day, making it easier for them to remember their classes and assignments.

SITED SOURCES

  • In a survey given through the week of December 2nd through the 9th, given to 46 mckinney high school students, we came to the conclusion that block scheduling is more preferred than traditional scheduling. we gave the survey to 4 different classes each filled with the different grade levels.
  • when interviewing the administrators it seemed as all of the administrators felt as if all of them felt that regular scheduling was a better option for the students. they did agree a lot of the concepts of block scheduling are good but traditional is more preferred.

how we plan to carry this out...

  • we have decided that the best approach to better the success of all mckinney students we should switch all mckinney isd schools to block scheduling. by doing this, teachers will receive better homework and test scores due to more time to do homework and study for the test as well as kids will have more face to face time in that class with teacher allowing them to understand homework and projects better.

Would Block Scheduling improve and/or benefit the lives of high school students?

We plan to go to each mckinney isd high school and present the proposal to them, explain our thoughts and get their opinions as well as some of their students. we will than go to the school board and propose all the data we have gathered from the schools as well as all the data from online and petition for blocked scheduling to be placed in our high schools.
