BY DIAMOND RAMBLE 4TH

According to Duke University, nuclear chemistry is at play in a variety of aspects of daily life, including the warmth and light of the sun. The sun itself would not exist without nuclear chemistry.

BETA

Beta particles are negatively charged electrons emitted by the nucleus. Since the mass of an electron is a tiny fraction of an atomic mass unit, the mass of a nucleus that undergoes b decay is changed by only a tiny amount. The mass number is unchanged. The nucleus contains no electrons.

EARNEST RUTHFORD

Chemist and physicist Ernest Rutherford was born August 30, 1871, in Spring Grove, New Zealand. A pioneer of nuclear physics and the first to split the atom, Rutherford was awarded the 1908 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his theory of atomic structure. Dubbed the “Father of the Nuclear Age,” Rutherford died in Cambridge, England, on October 19, 1937 of a strangulated hernia.

ALPHA

FUSION AND FISSION

SCIENTIST VS THEORY

modern day

Fusion is a nuclear process in which two light nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus.

So Bohr proposed a new model of the atom with basic principals: -Electrons only exist in fixed orbitals (shells) and not anywhere in between. In summary: Rutherford explained the nucleus of an atom, while Bohr was more into the electrons and their energy levels .

Alpha Radiation/Decay. During Alpha decay an atom spits out two protons and two neutrons from its nucleus. This little bundle is called an "alpha particle." Alpha decay usually happens in larger, heavier atoms.

Fission is nuclear process in which a heavy nucleus splits into two smaller nuclei.

GAMMA

Gamma rays are a type of electromagnetic radiation that results from a redistribution of electric charge within a nucleus. A g ray is a high energy photon. The only thing which distinguishes a g ray from the visible photons emitted by a light bulb is its wavelength; the g ray's wavelength is much shorter.
