The 26th Amendment of the United States Constitution

• March 14, 1971, approved by congress
• June 2, 1971, states ratified the amendment
• North Carolina was the last state to ratify the amendment.
• This was the shortest period of time that it took for an amendment to be ratified.

Veterans complained that if at the age of 18 they could enter into the draft, then they should also be able to vote.

It all started with the World War II Veterans.

The draft is a drawing for soldiers into the war.

Eisenhower called for a proposal, and declared the amendment.

The 26th amendment was passed during the Vietnam War.

Nationwide anti-war protests were taking place and our country was slowly dividing because of war.

The 14th amendment of the constitution states that the voting age should be 21.

This created a basis for the 21 years of age to vote rule.

What Happened After?

Opinion

My opinion on the topic is that the voting age should still be 21 years old or older.

Many teenagers are not ready for the responsibility of voting.

Most teenagers are still not sure how they want to spend their life. It might be too late when they realize this.

The voting age for entering the draft should also be 21.

Why was this amendment Proposed?

What was the amendment about?

• Made the legal voting age 18 years old
• The legal age was 21 years old according to the original constitution

When was it ratified?

President Eisenhower heard the veterans, and decided to take charge.

Eisenhower did not follow through with the amendment, so when children and grandchildren of these veterans were born, they followed with their ancestors words.
