Through community forums, citizens expressed the need for more space for the Hispanic Center. The Board of Directors for the center were able acquire an old fire station that had been closed for a number of years. The station was in the perfect location, right in the middle of the Hispanic community. The new center expansion would not come cheap though, the estimated costs were $1.4.
Two new board members, Mary and Jose, decided to take the initiative with the fundraising campaign. Together they raised $1.3 million for the renovations, primarily large donations from private foundations.

The thought of being so close to their goal, really started to get Mary and Jose excited. Not only the thought of reaching their goal, but the building was also to be renovated with the latest green building techniques.
To raise the final $100,000 for the renovations, Mary and Jose proposed a series of fundraising events. The events would focus on smaller donations, mainly from the Hispanic community. A formal event was planned to kick off the fundraising, with tickets costing $75 per person.
Yes, the ticket prices of the formal event were pretty steep for many of the Hispanic Community to attend. Also, the Hispanic community is more likely to donate to their church than social institutions
Their leadership does not compare well. They are not very team-oriented and they ignored value-based leadership, which is a critical part of the Latin American profile. They also are not participative, which could have helped them gain input from the community
The culture is said to score low on dimensions like future orientation, performance orientation, and institutional collectivism. This means that they caremore about the present, not prparing for the future and they are more devoted to their families, not social institutions.
Overall, Mary and Jose really did a great job raising money. They displayed great drive, initiative, and networking. However, they were also individualistic, did not communicate well, and did not study the Hispanic demographic well enough to target them specifically for donations.
