Wood Stork

Mycteria americana

  • Listed endangered 6/26/2014
  • Found in cypress trees, marshes, swamps, or (less often) among mangroves.
  • Described as long-legged wading birds, about 45 inches tall, with a wingspan of 60 to 65 inches. The plumage is white except for black primaries and secondaries as well as a short black tail. The head and neck are unfeathered and dark gray in color. The bill is black, and slightly decurved. Immature birds have gray feathers on their head and a yellowish bill.

  • Listed as endangered 4/28/1976
  • During the winter they hibernate in deep, vertical caves while in the summer, they roost in caves which are scattered along rivers. They do not use houses or barns.
  • in July or August, gray bats have dark gray fur which turns to a chestnut brown or russet. They weigh 7-16 grams. The wing membrane connects to its ankle instead of at the toe

  • Found in lower Gulf and Atlantic coastal plains in what were longleaf pine-wiregrass flatwoods and savannas ( tannic wetlands )
  • Adult average length ranges from 3.5-5.3 in; while the larvae range from 0.5-1 in. Adults are a dark gray or black color on the dorsum with a pattern of light gray or grayish brown markings, a frosted lichen like pattern, or small annuli. The dark gray venter of adults is covered with lighter gray spots or flecks. The larvae are a brown color with a light yellow or tan vertebral stripe bordered by light lateral stripes

  • Listed as endangered 3/11/1967
  • Found in marine, estuarine, and freshwater environment
  • Manatees are described as having seal-shaped bodies with flippers and a round, paddle-shaped tail. They are typically grey in color but can range from black to light brown. The muzzle is heavily whiskered and coarse. Adult manatees, on average, are about nine feet long and weigh about 1,000 pounds. At birth, calves are between three and four feet long and weigh between 40 and 60 pounds.
