Citation: "He tosses a berry in a high arc towards me" (3).

Commentary: Gale is tossing a berry that they have gathered and is offerning/tossing it to Katniss .This shows other actions from different characters of the Hunger Games.

Citation: 'I never want to have kids,” I say.

“I might. If I didn’t live here,” says Gale.

“But you do,” I say, irritated.

“Forget it,” he snaps back'

Commentary: This shows that Katniss doesn't want to run away with Gale and someday have children. When Katniss is harsh about it Gale ends the conversation since someday he personal wants to have kids, but Katniss thinks that if she has kids then she will not be free and looked up inside.

Thoughts/feelings

Citation: "Prim’s face is as fresh as a raindrop, as lovely as the primrose for which she was named. My mother was very beautiful once, too" (1).

Commentary: This shows that Katniss is descibing Prim and her mother. She is also descibing as Prim being innocent for the reaping. Katniss is also describing that her mother was once beautiful too. When Katniss is saying that Prim is like a Primrose I think that Prim is connected to a Primrose because of her healing.

Citation: I protect Prim in every way I can, but I’m powerless against the reaping" (6.)

Appearance

Comentary: Katniss is trying to protect Prim from the Reaping. She is also scared becuase Katniss knows that Prim is still young and she would not survive since she doesn't know how to hunt or fight or survive on her own.

Citation: "....slide into my hunting boots. Supple leather that has molded to my feet. I pull on trousers, a shirt, tuck my long dark braid up into a cap, and grab my forage bag" ( 1 ).

Commentary: This shows that Katniss is has to put on different clothing so that she doesn't get seen when she is hunting. She is also being cautious and bringing a bag with her so that she can collect what she has hunted in the woods that is closed off to district twelve.

Symbol: Fire

Citation: " I scrub off the dirt and sweat from the woods and even wash my hair. To my surprise my mother has laid out one of her own lovely dresses for me. A soft blue thing with matching shoes" ( 5 ).

Commentary: Katniss is getting ready for the reaping and finds out that her mother brought out one of her pretty dresses that she has had for awhile. By this she is surprised and grateful. I think that when her mother gave her the dress to wear, she was happy to forget about the reaping and Prim.

Action

Citation: "... I’m in the trees, I retrieve a bow and sheath of arrows from a hollow log" (2 ).

Commentary: This shows that Katniss is moving around and she is hunting from the trees to try and find any animals that are in the woods. When Katniss is explaining that she hides her hunting supplies, I think that she has to hide it because she will get caught by the capital/district 12 for hunting.

Speech

Citation: " The predators ignore us on a day when easier, tastier prey abounds. By late morning, we have a dozen fish, a bag of greens and, best of all, a large quantity of strawberries" (4 ).

Citation: 'Hey, Catnip,' says Gale' (2).

Gale is talking to Katniss and using her nickname, "Catnip". Also this shows that Gale is Katniss' friend who she goes hunting with to feed their families.

Symbol: Bow & Arrow

Commentary: Katniss and Gale went out hunting and collected many animals that will feed their families. Katniss has to also be careful where she trades, she trades at the Hob where everybody trades. Text to world: The Hob is like a farmers market.

Citation: 'Leave the district. Run off. Live in the woods. You and I, we could make it'', says Gale.

I don’t know how to respond. The idea is so preposterous" (3).

Symbol: Speech bubble

In this citation, Katniss is scared to run off with Gale and that she wants to stay here with Prim and her mom. Katniss also thinks that Gale is also scared to run away because of the reaping. Neither of them want to get picked.
