Creating Your Argumentative Essay

Check Yourself

Counterclaim & Rebuttal

- What is the opposing view?

1. State the opposing view

2. Acknowledge a point they make

3. Explain why their view is not as strong as your view

(Why is your argument better)

Ex.

Some people believe that people who put themselves in dangerous situations deserve to have rescue services, because the rangers signed up for that job. However, rangers become rangers for many reasons and may not have expected to save more and more people. As the article "Helicopter Rescues Increasing on Everest" states, helicopter rescues are "becoming increasingly common." Rangers who have been working for many years may find themselves in a dangerous situation they did not expect, and it is unfair for them to risk their lives simply because helicopter rescues are more frequently requested.

Introduction Paragraph

- Introduces your claim (which side are you taking?)

- Grabs the audience's attention - makes them want to read your paper

Ex.

Icy slopes, below-zero temperatures, extreme winds, and dead bodies as markers; this is Mount Everest. In recent years, the number of climbers has increased, leading to an increase in the number of deaths and accidents. These deaths are not only of climbers, but of the rangers who work on the mountains. It is unfair to rescuers that their lives are put on the line for people who have put themselves into this dangerous situation.

Body Paragraphs

- Fill in the Reason/Evidence boxes on page 31 of your Performance Assessment workbook

- Each of these boxes will become its own body paragraph

- Body paragraphs should be formatted as delicious OREO paragraphs

O - State your opinion clearly, beginning with a good transition word

R - Give your Reason that supports your opinion

E - Give your Example (EVIDENCE!) and Explain your example

O - Sum up your reasons, examples and explain how they support your opinion

Conclusion Paragraph

- Restate your claim

- Summarize your argument, counterclaim, and rebuttal

- Make a recommendation about what you think should be done with the rescue services on Mount Everest

Ex.

Although rescue services are becoming more common, they should not be considered a right for people who put themselves into dangerous situations. The lives of rangers, the fact that the dangers are well known, and the lack of reliability of rescue vehicles are all reasons that rescue services are not a right. In order to decrease the need for rescue services, there should be more regulations implemented on the people who are attempting to climb Mount Everest.
