Salat is the first pillar of faith in Islam, after the shahadah - the declaration of faith.
Salat is one of the definitive duties of every Muslim,
so definitive that if a Muslim were not not establish their
daily salat, they would exit the fold of Islam and enter into the fold of disbelief.
Ibn 'Abbas narrated that the Prophet (saw) said:
"For whomever Allah wants good, he gives him understanding in the religion." [Sahih]
The evening prayer
Jabir narrated that the Prophet (saw) said: "Between disbelief and faith is abandoning the Salat." [Sahih]

Why are they so important?
Thus for those who establish salat, and the other pillars of Islam, they are the rightly guided ones and will be of those who receieve the mercy of Allaah and have their reward with him (i.e.: Jannah, Paradise).

The message from these hadiths is that those who have understanding of their faith as Muslims will strive hard for the cause of Allah and maintain their duties to Him, while those who are heedless (i.e.: do not take the time to understand the importance of salat and other obligatory duties [Tahweed]) are more likely to not establish salat regularly or at all.

The sunset prayer
Well what is said about salat in the Quran?
Allaah says: "This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah - (2) Who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them, (3) And who believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith]. (4) Those are upon [right] guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful. (5) [Al-Baqarah 2-5]
