Campo uses free verse with repetition in this poem to portray his message. He explains thought the poem how poetry must be precise but at the same time compares it to the plot of homosexuality by showing things don't always have to be what everyone expects them to be. He also uses repetition of the word expect and the phrase "i thought".

Biography of Campo

Rafael Campo was born in Dover, New jersey in 1964 and is still alive today. He is a poet and essayist who teaches and practices at Harvard medical School. He was raised Catholic and is openly gay and devotes much of his practice to treating latinos, gay and lesbian, and transgendered people and people suffering from HIV.

Summary

For J.W. is about how one man has feelings for another but since being homosexual is frowned upon in american culture he doesn't express those feelings. It gets across the point of how men are presumed masculine and cant be express vulnerability to other men.
