Privvies back then was the name for an outdoor toilet. However, the reason that made the privvie so disgusting is that more than one family used it.

In 1800 there was 70,000 people living in Britain. 51 years later in 1851 there were as many people in towns as there were in the country side. In 1900 there were 45 places with that population.1 year later in 1901 80% of Britain lived in towns or cities.
