Government

Economic Growth
In the late 70s, China's government began allowing some free market into its economy.
Because of this, its economy exploded.
Agriculturally, China exports rice, tea, wheat, and potatoes.
Their factories make just about everything, and China is the world's largest user of coal and second largest of oil.
Military
China's military has undergone massive increases in the last ten years.
While China can't challenge the US at sea, they are building a navy to compete with Japan and South Korea.
They have around 300 nukes the the largest number of infantry in the world.
Taiwan
After the Chinese Civil War, in 1949 nationalist forces who were anti-communist fled to the island of Taiwan.
China's communist did not take the island back, but insist it is still part of China.
This leads to awkwardness as Taiwan totally rules itself, but countries like the US pretend it's part of China to not annoy the Chinese.
Hong Kong and Macao
Two of China's wealthiest cities are Hong Kong and Macao.
Both were once western colonies- Hong Kong was British and Macao Portuguese. They only were added to China in the 1990s but are supposed to be semi-independent with democracy.
China has been ignoring this lately, however, with the communist party interfering in elections.
