Flex Grouping Process

Beginning of Year:

Screening, Analysis, Grouping Selection

  • Screening-Test all students using DIBELS, BPST, Reading A-Z, and a Phonemic Awareness Test.
  • Analysis-Grade level teams analyze all testing results to find deficits in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and comprehension.
  • Grouping Selection- Students are selected for FLEx groups based on specific reading deficits and placed on a PEP.

FLEx grouping Design

and Implementation

  • Program Design-Instructional Associates participate in training on research-based programs designed specifically for student deficits.
  • Implementation-Instructional Associates lead FLEx groups 4 days/week for 45 minute blocks.

Progress Monitoring-FLEX students are assessed every 2 weeks. After six weeks, students who do not make sufficient progress are referred to Intervention team, students are regrouped, and students who make expected growth move back into the classroom.

Intervention Team-

Students who do not make expected growth are placed in an additional FLEx group as a second intervention in hopes that extended time will fuel progress.

Testing Referral-Students who do not make sufficient progress with the second intervention in place will be referred to EC testing.
