What happened?

  • Pressure control systems failed and pipe number five blew up.
  • Oil caught fire and burnt for two months
  • 35,000 to 150,000 barrels per day
  • Oil stopped flowing by itself
  • total loss: 2,000,000 barrels

Aftermath

Background Information

  • Emergency flood banks were built to keep the oil from spreading over the area.
  • Some of the oil was absorbed into the ground and the rest burned for about 2 months.
  • Did not stop burning until the oil stopped flowing by itself.
  • Only real issue: Loss of jobs of people who worked at the oil field
  • Started on March 2, 1992
  • Fergana Valley, Uzbekistan
  • Worst oil spill in the history of Asia
  • They had been producing oil since 1908.
