Remember Gestalt psychology? It focused on finding laws of human perception that we all share in common. We are going to exam these laws more in depth.
Figure-Ground Relationships: The natural tendency for humans to perceive figures out of backgrounds. This preference is seen as early as birth. A good illustration of this are reversible figures such as the ones below.
Continuity: The tendency to perceive things as simply as possible with a continuous pattern rather than with a complex broken up pattern.
Contiguity: The tendency to perceive two things occurring close together in time as being related. Usually perceived as cause and effect.
Proximity: A tendency to perceive objects that are near each other as being part of the same grouping.
Similarity: The tendency to perceive similar looking objects as belonging to the same group.
Closure: The tendency to complete figures that are incomplete.
Perception is the way the brain takes all the external sensory information coming to it and tries to put it together in a meaningful fashion. Perception is different for everyone. Two people may be shown the same picture and perceive it in two different ways. However, there are some standards in perception.
Size constancy: The tendency to interpret an object as always being the same no matter how near or far it is from the viewer. For example, you don't think a person shrinks as they walk away from you.
Shape Constancy: The tendency to interpret an object as being the same shape even if the shape of the object has changed on the retina. For example we don't think doors change shape when they open.
Brightness Constancy: The tendency to interpret the brightness of an object as being the same even in different lighting conditions. Even in the dark white still appears brighter than black.
