About HLHS:

In Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, the left side of the heart is underdeveloped, or not functioning at all. The left side of the heart can't properly supply blood to the body.

Symptoms:

  • Grayish- blue skin color (cyanosis)
  • rapid/ difficult breathing
  • poor feeding
  • cold hands and feet
  • unactive

Detection:

It is either diagnosed before birth or soon after

Treatment Options:

This defect isn't curable. Some babies can be treated with a series of operations, or a heart transplant. If surgery is the option, it will be done in many different steps. Often is fatal.

Causes:

This normally happens in the fetal stage of growth but it is still unknown what causes this. It is thought to be related to other heart defects.

Number of people affected:

1 out of 4,344 babies are born with it each year.
