Unit 3: Cultural Patterns and Processes

The Princess and the Frog: voodoo man

Definition: Voodoo culture is a system of religion, culture, and spiritualism, which originates in Africa. It is based on the Voudon, which is the belief of a creator (Great Spirit). It is a monotheistic culture and is a mystical, dark and contemporary practice.

In this scene, the movie is depicting a rather vulgar representation of the voodoo culture, making the voodoo man the representation of evil. The website shows how this movie is biased against the voodoo culture. It is not a Africans for hundreds of years.

A great article showing the voodoo in real life compared to in the movie

Also I am very very sorry there is one bad word! I tried very hard to find another article, but this was the best overall. Sorry! (There is only one though)

Shows the role of a woman in that society

Mulan: Gender Gap

Describes both racial and sexual stereotyping in Mulan

Music Video of Hawaii Culture

Definition: Gender gap is the difference between social, economic, cultural, and religious status, opportunities, attitudes, stereotypes, etc. Women are discriminated against in less developed countries.

Mulan is a growing lady in China. She has to be very ladylike, including her mannerisms, her clothes, her looks, etc. Women are not allowed to fight in the movie, they cannot do hard labor, and their honor is to be married off to a high- class man. This scene shows the stereotypes and rules arise, "tiny waist", "you'll bring honor to us all", etc.

Lilo & Stitch: Hawaiian Culture

Definition: Hawaiian culture originates from Polynesia, the Western Pacific, and the edges of Asia. The people who follow this culture surf a lot, do hula dances, and practice rituals for volcano eruptions.

The song that is attached is a great example of Hawaiian culture in this movie Lilo and Stitch. It shows the cultural dances, clothing style, practices, and language. Even the little american kids are learning the culture. In this movie, they also frequently surf. Lilo and Stitch shows a true representation of Hawaiian culture.

Little Mermaid: Cultural Region

Hunchback of Notre Dame: Gypsy discrimination

Definition: A formal or functional region where there is common and similar cultural practices.

In the movie The Little Mermaid, there are two main cultural regions, the land and the sea. The Land has culture about clothes, a shopping center, servants in the castle, etc. In the sea, there are cultural traits such as communication with animals, fear of humans, no restriction on love, etc. Ariel wants to cross over into the land cultural region and leave her sea cultural region for her love. This movie shows an abstract representation of the cultural regions, because there is no such thing in real life.

Esmeralda's Song

Ariel's Part of your world

Definition: Ethnic Discrimination is the act of segregating, treating unfairly, or looking down upon of a specific ethnicity. Race is the major factor for discrimination. The ethnicity being discriminated against is usually secluded, or made fun of.

In this movie, Esmeralda is a gypsy who is unfaily treated. She sings a song in this scene about how she is an outcast and she is asking god why can't people treat each other fairly. Just because of her ethnicity, people avoid her, act as if she is a different creature, etc. She is even attempted to be burned at the stake. This is a true example of religious discrimination.
