Subtropical Steppe (BSh) Climate

Future

Current

Dryness is a result of a 'rain shadow' effect induced by the Sierra Madre mountain range. This has limited agriculture to small fertile pockets within Mexico, which is only about 12-17 percent.

Effect of Climate Change

Already, due to the low water in monterrey the monterrey platyfish population has rapidy gone down. There are only about 250 individuals left and numbers are dwindeling.

Monterrey

Closer to BWh, Desert climate

Near CFa, Humid subtropical

Although The climate is hot and dry, the population continues to grow at about a rate of 40,000 a year.

It's current population is over 4 million.

Monterrey's economy is largely industry based.

Climate

Average Temp is over 64.4 degrees

Rainfall is under 30"

Usually border desert climates.

Less rain; would be classified as an arid desert.

More rain; it would be classified as a tallgrass prairie.

Semiarid is too dry to support forests of trees, but a few scattered trees that require less water can be found here. Mainly grasses and shrubs cover Semiarid land. The plants can be thorny or waxy, which are adaptations to preserve water and protect plants from fires or natural preditors.

The grasses of semiarid climate attract grazing animals such as wildebeests, zebras, giraffes, gazelle, deer, and bison. Most of these animals migrate when conditions are too dry. The herbivores attract carnivores such as coyotes, jackals, hyenas, lions, and wolves.

The ITCZ and the Subtropical Steppe

The ITCZ or Intertropical Convergence Zone appears as a band of clouds that circles the globe near the equator. Usually the ITCZ produces thunderstorms.

During the summers in Subtropical Steppe Climates, the ITCZ is nearly overhead, which results in most of the rainfall for the year.

SUMMARY!!!!!

The Subtropical Steppe climate is largely affected by climates that are in it's proximity (BWh climates) and by "rain shadows" caused by mountain ranges.

But Subtropical Steppe climates can also exist next to water, provided it is close to a desert.

Climate change will have a large effect on most places with a BSh climate, bringing cities closer to deserts and fertile lands around them will dissapear.

But as for their economies, cities have largely adapted to the lack of fertile land. Instead, becoming largely industrial, instead of agricultural.
