Background Information

Conscription Crisis of 1944

Repercussions

In the end, King chose conscription

Reaction was mostly negative

Many tried to avoid conscription by:

  • Medical Leave
  • Feigning homosexuality
  • Going to another country

Conclusion

Conscription is the compulsory involvement in a type of national service (usually military)

Citizens often dislike conscription due to their conscientious objections to a war or government

Prime minister King promised to have no conscription but eventually did so anyway

Due to death toll overseas and lack of volunteers, conscription was enforced

This decision enraged many Canadians (mostly French Canadians)

People who found ways to avoid conscription were called draft-dodgers

Most people who were conscripted did not make it overseas before end of war

Out of the 2463 conscripts who reached Europe, 79 were KIA

What is conscription?

  • The compulsory enlistment in a national service (Usually in the military)
