HULI TRIBE OF PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Religion and worship in the tribe

Where in the world and what type of land

They live in Papua New Guinea next to the South Pacific Ocean.In the Tari Valley. They are the biggest tribe there.

Some of the land is rainforest but where they live it is muddy,dry and dusty

Traditionally abide by strict rituals giving offerings to please the spirits of their ancestors.

Sickness and misfortune are thought to be the work of witchcraft and sorcery

What traditions do they have?

Male Huli children are looked after by their Mother until the age of 5 after that he will be cared for by his Father.

During puberty the males get isolated from the women for 2-3 years in order to grow their hair.

Men buy their brides at a starter pf 30 pigs.

Huli wife's work 10 hours in the garden but allowed rest when on period.

How do they dress?

Food

They wear traditional highland clothing. Women wear grass skirts.Men wear nothing but a gourd which they tie round their genitals and waist.

The main food they is is sweet potato. They only eat meat on special occasions. They hunt birds,monkeys and rodents.

They think cannibalism is as bad as we think it is.

Pigs are a form of wealth.

Roles of men and women in the tribe

The men and women live in separate huts. Males go to the bachelors hut to grow body and facial hair to make wigs.

Men and women don't wear shirts and always carry a knife with them.

The women grow the food in their vegetable gardens for there tribe to eat.

Huli girls do not receive education but get taught how to make bows and grow crops.
