Qualitative Sampling Methods

Purposive sampling

Snowball sampling

Opportunity Sampling

Non-Probability

Sampling

This type of sampling involves the researcher asking a volunteer to invite other participants

This type of sampling uses participants that are easily available.

This type of sampling targets a specific group of people that are expected to offer the most detailed information that is required for the study.

It is useful when it is difficult to find participants that represent the target population (rare or stigmatization)

It is useful when the access to a wider population is limited

These are sampling methods without random selection of participants

It is useful when researchers are targeting a specific group that might not be common

Advantages

+ Participants are easily available and convenient

+ Costs and time required is usually small

Disadvantages

- Biased results

- Possible gender imbalance

- Individual differences

Advantages

+ Allows to reach populations that are difficult to find and identify

+ Cheap and quick

Disadvantages

- Representativeness of sample is not guaranteed

- Sampling bias

Advantages

+Representativeness of target population

+A wide range of techniques can be applied

Disadvantages

- Researcher bias

Qualitative

Sampling Methods

In order for psychology studies to be conducted, participants are needed.

But what factors are involved in the process of selecting participants?

Stratified Sampling

Probability Sampling Methods

Applying this to the stimulus...

This type of sampling breaks down the target group into sub-categories to gain a more accurate distribution of the target audience.

It is useful when

These involve a random selection of participants

Advantages

+Representativeness of target population is high

+Statistical conclusions can be made

Disadvantages

- A complete list of the target population is required

- Costs and time required are high

The students that participated in the Suldo et al (2008) case study on one of school's IB program, were carefully chosen in order to represent the target population.

Therefore, non-probability sampling was used.

Since they were all enrolled into the IB diploma program, they offer the most information for the researcher, thus it can be said that the type of sampling used was possibly purposive sampling.
