2. What was the purpose of the Guardians of the Revolution? What happens when they encounter Marji? How does Marji respond?
A: The purpose of Guardians of the Revolution is to arrest women who are improperly veiled. When they encountered Marjane, they explained to her about the duties of muslim women. They mocked on her western clothing. Marjane reacted by coming up with excuses. She ended up telling them that her mother died and that her stepmother is really strict and that her stepmother will be extremely cruel towards her if she doesn’t return home immediately.

1. What is so appealing about Ghandi Avenue? What is the black market?
A: Black market is a place where citizens will illegally sell products under desperation. The Iran food shortage during the war was solved by the growth of the black market. Ghandi Avenue was where you find black markets.
- Marjane is rebelling against his society's standards.
- Parent and child relationship: Her mom is being really loose with her.
- Modernity vs. Fundamentalism: western products(jeans, denim jackets, buttons, posters, cadillacs) resemble modern aspects.

- Marjane put on her denim jacket with a MJ button, jeans, and new Nike sneakers to go out to buy tapes. Her mother lets her go out despite wearing all kind of Western clothing.
- On her way home, Marjane was interrupted by the GoR.
- The members of the GoR arrested her for not following the standards of dressing.
- At the end, she was able to talk her way out of it and go home safely. She did not inform her parents about it because she knew if she did, she wouldn't be able to go out alone again.
Summary
- A year after Marjane's uncle died, the borders have been reopened and Marjane's parents were able to get their passports again.
- Marjane's parents then went on a trip to Turkey for a few days, leaving Marjane at home. When they returned they were able to bring back western presents for Marjane.
- Presents included a denim jacket, Nike sneakers, MJ button, chocolate, and two posters.
