The Murillo Velarde Map serves as an evidence supporting the Philippines' claim that Scarborough or Panatag Shoal belongs to its territory and not to China, as they show the disputed area was under Spanish colonial sovereignty as far back as 1734. (C. Santamaria, 2012)
The Padre Pedro Murillo Velarde Map, also known as Carta Hydrographica y Chorographica de las Yslas Filipinas (1734) was known as the "Mother of all Philippine maps".
