Beatrice (Tris) starts at the Abnegation compound that she has lived at her whole life. Here she has an epiphany and realizes the faction she has been in her whole life is the wrong one.

She goes through a test at the age of 16 that decides in which faction she should end up. Her test results were indecisive, which meant she was something called Divergent and was told not to tell anynore that she was Divergent. After the test, a few days later, there is a ceremony where everyone who went through the test chooses in which faction they would like to end up. She chooses Dauntless; her brother chooses Erudite.

Here she undergoes Dauntless initiation under the training of Four and Eric. Eric is very ruthless in the way he teaches; Four has a different idea of how they should teach. Eric and Four are rivals, they were in initiation together and Four got the top position, where Eric got second.

About halfway through her initiation training, in the middle of the night she gets up to get a glass of water and hears 2 people walking down the hallway. One of them is Eric the other one is a woman named Jeanine from the Erudite faction. She starts listening in but gets taken by Peter, Al and Molly (all non-Dauntless born initiates) take Tris and hang he over the chasm that is in the Dauntless compound. Four intervenes and saves her from them.

A few days after the incident, all the parents visit their children who have gone to other factions. Tris's mother visits and a few of the other faction transfers had their parents come. Al and his parents weren't anywhere to be found. Tris finds out later that Al's parents never came and he had commited suicide by throwing himself into the chasm. Tris's mother also tells her to tell Caleb (Tris's brother) that he should study the hallucination serum, the one that is used in the test to determine which faction the child should be in. Tris sees her mother's tattoo on her back that proves she was in Dauntless before she transfered to Abnegation. Her mother also tells her that she shouldn't tell anyone that she is Divergent.

After an embarassing training day Tris decides to go do what her mother told her to do. Tell her brother that he should study the serum. She goes and tells her brother, but after she does she gets taken aside by some men in suits and gets interrogated by Jeanine, a woman who has been publishing articles in the paper vilifying Tris's parents due to both their children changing factions and she has been accusing Abnegation of hoarding supplies. She interrogates Tris asking why her test results were entered into the system manually instead of automatically and why they came back as Abnegation results but she chose Dauntless instead. Tris had to lie and say that she found Abnegation boring and didn't like their principles. She had to end up lying that she agreed with Jeanine about her vilifying her parents. Tris leaves and goes back to the Dauntless compound.

Tris gets escorted back by the guards in the train that goes all around the city. Once Tris gets off the train the first person she sees is Eric. He asks her where she was and what she was doing. He was accusing her of having attachments to her family, which you can't have once you have transferred. Four comes in and sees the interrogation and tells Eric to stop. He says that she was embarassed by what happened during training that day so she left to talk to her brother. During training she had done something very wimpy so Four had chastised her for it right in front of the whole group. Before all this Four and Tris were beginning a relationship. So he embarassed her in front of everybody and acted like he hated her so that no one would suspect they were in a relationship.

The next day, Four told Tris that hidden on a computer in the compound were some plans for weapons and invasion plans. The next day the results for the initiation were put up and for the non-Dauntless born initiates Tris was number 1. She was in the Dauntless faction. Those who didn't get a spot in the results were now Factionless.

Once Tris woke up the next day she got taken into a room with Jeanine who then injected her with a chip that was said to be a tracking chip. Tris then walked out and had a normal day in the Dauntless compound.

The next day Tris got woken up by one of her friends who was getting dressed and getting ready to leave. She tried to ask what was going on and why they were leaving so early but none of her friends would answer. They were all blank-faced. So she followed and tried to keep the blank-faced expression as well so as not to stand out to those who were watching. They all got weapons and got on the train headed for the Abnegation compound. Four was helping everyone get on the train and had the same blank-faced look on his face. That's when Tris realized that everyone was probably being mind-controlled by the chips that Jeanine had inserted into everyone the previous day. She got worried that Four, who was actually called Tobias, was also mind-controlled. So she got in, sat down and just sat like the rest of the people on the train. Four came and sat down besides her and squeezed her hand.

Once they got to the Abnegation compound, she saw that every family that had a government member in it was getting killed. That's when she realized that that was what the plans were for on the computer. The Dauntless were the only faction with weapons and Jeanine had wanted to overthrow the government and the Dauntless were her way of reaching that goal. They got stopped in front of Jeanine and Eric, who was part of the plan all along and wasn't injected with the chip, who were talking about how the Dauntless were completely mindless and couldn't see or hear anything they were doing. Jeanine said that they were being controlled by a program that was back on a computer in the Dauntless compound was making all this happen and that it was guarded heavily. Four and Tris, both Divergent, were not affected by the chip. Tris shot Eric in the foot while Four shot Eric in the kneecap while they both ran away. Tris got shot in the shoulder and Four stayed with her. They both got captured and taken into an interrogation room with Jeanine. She was talking about how she was trying to fix the problem that Divergents would not be affected by the chip, and so had a prototype she would like to try on Four. He lunged at her throat but got pulled away by one of the guards so Jeanine injected him with the chip. She said that the chip then made him see enemies as friends and friends as enemies as well as being controlled by the computer program. She sent him to protect the computer. Tris was then put into a jail cell that slowly started fillling up with water. Tris decided to accept her fate and sat on the bottom as the tank filled up. As she submerged, the glass broke and she was pulled out by her mother, who had shot the glass. Her mother then took her outside when some soldiers saw them and her mother told Tris to run to the cellar in their house. Her mother ran into the middle of the group of soldiers while firing shots in the air. She got shot while Tris was running away. She has to kill Will, who was an initiate that she had become friends with.

Once Tris got to the cellar she saw that her brother, her father and Four's abusive father was there. They decide that they should all go to destroy the computer.

Once they all get to the Dauntless compound they see that in the upper levels are a bunch of guards. They make their way up the levels and on their way they see one of the initiates and Tris tackles him and asks him where the computer is until she finally has to shoot him in the arm to get her answer. They make their way up and shoot guards on the way. As they get out of the elevator that takes them to the computer room they see 3 guards. Tris ducks down as her father shoots them both. They start running out but more guards are about to run around the corner when her father decides to lead them away. He runs to the other end and shoots them but gets shot as well. He tells Tris to keep going. She gets to the computer room and sees that Four is guarding it. He lunges at her as she tries to concince him that she is Tris. She ends pinning him as he goes for her throat. She ends up with the gun up to his head, so he stops reaching for her. She puts the gun down unable to kill him. He starts sitting up, hugs her and says "Tris". They take down the computer program and they make their way down. They make their way to the train without her dad, who has passed away, and the only ones left are Four's dad, Caleb, Four and Tris. They get on the train hoping to make their way to the Amity compound and stay there for a bit.
