Here, watch this video and see if you can spot any assumptions or stereotypes.

In his speech Bill Cosby addresses the issues at hand with today's society in a comical way such as his view on AAVE.

He talks about how children aren't raised to the correct standard these days, children used to respect their parents and be darn right scared of them. They wouldn't dream of being caught with a gun because it would embarrass the family however nowadays its almost common in America.

He also mentions how having a baby out of marriage used to be a disgrace to you and your entire family however in more recent years it's become seen as slightly more acceptable. Also girls as young as 13 seem to be "desperate to grow up fast" and are "popping one out" at every opportunity these days. Why are they not embarassed of this?

Assumptions, Stereotypes or what?

Bill Cosby's speech

You're right in saying that there is in fact many assumptions made in that clip. The two men make the mistake of assuming that the woman walking down the road feared them because they are African American when actually she was just holding onto his arm however they are unaware of the context. This then leads to the two men submitting to their stereotype by ownership of a gun and by stealing their car.

Having a great number of negative portrayals of African Americans seemed to have forced a generalized stereotype. Sooner or later due to this the public begin to acknowledge the stigma and also maybe accept it. In the clip instead of proving their stigma wrong they became rather angry about the assumptions they thought people where making of them and then further influenced their stigma by performing their stereotype. The Color Purple is often criticised for its representation of African Americans for this exact reason.

The Color Purple Criticized for negative representation of African American men

Many reviewers were disturbed by her portrayal of black males, which they found unduly negative. When the novel was made into a film in 1985 by Steven Spielberg, Walker became even more successful and controversial. While she was criticized for negative portrayal of her male characters, Walker was admired for her powerful portraits of black women. Reviewers praised her for her use of the epistolary form, in which written correspondence between characters comprises the content of the book, and her ability to use AAVE.
