Born November 1777, England, Francis Greenway was an architect who was transported to Australia as a convict after committing the crime of forgery.
In 1812 Francis Greenway was sentenced to death after being found guilty of financial forgery. Later on The penalty was changed and, instead, Greenway was sent to Australia for 14 years as a convict.

Francis Greenway grew up with his father, Francis Greenway, and mother, Ann, née Webb. Members of his family, had always either been a stonemason, builder or an architect. Francis was an architect. He also had a close bond with Authur Phillip.
Arthur Phillip helped Francis Greenway by writing a letter to Lachlan Macquarie, Governor of NSW, recommending Greenway to him.
Francis Greenway arrived in Sydney on the General Hewitt (which was ship to transport convicts), in February 1814 to serve his sentence.
He started work as a colonial architect by designing a geometric stair for Ultimo House.
Francis Greenway died September 1837, in Newcastle and was buried in a small cemetery in a lonely paddock outside East Maitland.
