Jan.

1919

Event Summary

  • The League of Nations was established at the Paris Peace Conference after WWI, it was founded for the purpose to preserve peace, Canada served the League during 1927-30

Significance

  • The league provided oppurtunities for international discussion of political and legal actions

Relative Positivity

  • Even though The League of Nations was determined to preserve peace, the League was unsuccessful and disbanded after a few years, so the League did not made much progress with peacekeeping

May-June 1919

Event Summary

  • Massive employment and inflation, and the success of the Russian Revolution caused this strike. The strikers demanded better wages, collective bargaining and better working conditions. 30,000 labour workers left their jobs within hours

Significance

  • This strike was the worstest strike that ever happened in Canadian history. At the end of this strike, many strike leaders were arrested and three people were killed.

Relative Positivity

  • This event was a big negative because it is one of the worst strikes in Canadian history and the strike ended even worse. But some of the ideas that the strike leaders thought of will be used in modern-day politics

October 30, 1929

Mackenzie King's 5 cent speech

Event Summary

  • PM Mackenzie King suspected that provical requests for relief money was a Conservative plot. During his speech, King proclaimed that he will not give even five cents for relief money to any province whivh is led by a Conservative government and kept his word

Significance

  • This speech was significant to Canadian history because since he kept his word, he lost his position as PM to R.B. Bennett at 1930 and Canadians hoped that Bennett will help them

Relative Positivity

  • This speech was not as negative as the others since it did not caused much trouble to Canadians since that they could have voted Bennett instead of King at the next election

October 29, 1929

Black Tuesday

Event Summary

  • About 16 million Canadian shares were all sold for almost $4 million, making each share worth about $4. Billions of dollars were lost in such little time, banks went bankrupt and many people were left unemployed.

Significance

  • This is significant because Black Tuesday is then followed by the Great Depression and this event was one of the reasons that caused WWII. This event affected Canadians from farmers to businessmen.

Relative Positivity

  • This event was the beginning of the world's worst market crash. Many people suicided because they were afraid that they can no longer take of their families. Many young men had to "ride the rails" throughout Canada to find jobs. It was a very difficult time back then.

British Privy Council decalres that women are persons

Event Summary

  • The Persons Case was a milestone victory for women's rights in Canada. The women who fought for women's rights were called, the Famous Five, and the members are: Emily Murphy, Henrietta Mair Edwards, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney and Irene Parlby. The Famous 5 appealed the Supreme Court of Canada decision to the British Privy Council, with the help of Mackenzie King. After a long heated arguement, the Council decided that women are persons

Significance

  • This event was significant because if the Famous 5 did not persuade the Privy Council about women's rights, women of today wil not have the priveliges they have right now.

Relative Positivity

  • This was a milestone in Canadian history because five ordinary Canadian women fought for women's rights in Canada and they took their issue to the highest authority back at the day. This is one of the reasons why Canadians should be proud of their country

1926

Event Summary

  • The report was named after, a British cabinet minister and former PM, Lord Balfour. This report are the conlusions of an Imperial conference committee under the chairmanship of Lord Balfour on relations between the British dominions. This report declares that all British dominions can now fully make their own decisions while still being part of the British colonies and these dominions are also part of the British Commonwealth of Nations

Significance

  • This event is important because it began the quest for Canada's independence, which is Canada's most valued privilege. This is one of the reasons that led to Canada's independence.

Relative Positivity

  • This is a positive event because Canada now has the right to make their own decisions , mostly, without Great Britain telling them them to join them. This only affects the Parliament and not entirely on its citizens since corruption can take advantage of this privilege of Great Britain.
