Australia was like 6 different countries before federation. People couldn't even travel across the states. They couldn't travel by train because in every state there were different gauges for the trains to run on. In 1898 there was the first referendum in witch Queensland,Western Australia and New South Wales didn't vote in. In 1899 the next referendum was held and now only Queensland came back and voted in. 3 weeks later NSW joined the federation group. In 1900 Britain said Australia could federate so then in the next referendum Western Australia joined. So on the first of January, 1901 Australia became a federated country. The first prime minister was Edmund Barton.
