Reading Comprehension 7A

Lesson 1

Gravity

Read 2

Redistribute or have students take out "Round and Round?"

What is this word? What is gravity? Gravity is the target word for the story we will read in the next activity. Gravity is defined as the force of attraction between objects. To help us further explore this word, we will be using the "Give One, Get One" pre-reading activity.

Today, you will reread the passage "Round and Round?" Read the first two paragraphs silently. Then pause to think about what you have read. Afterward, describe the mental pictures that you have created about the reading before continuing. After sharing, continue reading the next section of the story and repeat the process for the entire story.

hand out piece of paper to student have them fold in half. Have students follow directions on next slide.

Summarize the Text

On your paper, write "Give One" at the top left-hand column and "Get One" at the top of the right-hand colmn

Now, write down any new information you learned from discussion in the "Get One" column on your paper.

To summarize expository text, all the most important facts, or main ideas, must be included. Think about what we learned about gravity. Look at one paragraph at a time and find the main idea in each. Use the information to write a summary of each paragraph.

Using the "Give One" column, brainstorm a list of all the things you already know about gravity, and write each thing in that column.

After creating your "Give One" lists, we will discuss what you have included on your lists.

"Give One" "Get One"

Have students brainstorm facts they remember from passage as you record them on the board for each paragraph

discuss the lists the students have come up with.

Lesson 2

Distribute "Round and Round?" (Student activity 1.)

Now we will prepare to read "Round and Round?" Let's begin by skimming the text. Remember, skimming a text helps successful readers answer questions they have before they read. Skim to find out the topic you are going to read about and if the passage is narrative or expository.

Allow 30 seconds for students to skim

After they skim text, go to the next slide

Read 1

Is the passage an example of a narrative expository text?

Now let's begin reading the passage. We will pause after each paragraph to ask a question about the paragraph we just read. Once we've asked and then answered a question, we'll continue reading.

Read the first paragraph with the students. Then pause to have students ask a question about the paragraph. Once students have asked and then answered a question, continue reading. Repeat this activity with the remaining paragraphs.

once students have finished reading the passage, ask students,

narrative

expository

Did you find answers to all of your questions?

Since we have concluded our reading, where can you possibly find the answer to any new questions you might have?

You may use other resources such as the library, articles, and books.

How do you know?

Answers will vary but should include some facts from the passage.

What is the topic of this passage?

Good readers will also ask, "How do I feel about what I have read?" What do you think about the reading?

That's right, the topic is gravity.
