Lituya Bay, Alaska Tsunami

Lituya bay Tsunami Size

Lituya Bay tsunami is the largest

tsunami that's ever been recorded

hitting a height of 524m tall, which is higher then the empire state building

Death Rate

The death rate from the lituya bay tsunami

was only 3 but over 50 people were injured

because of tree damage to their homes ad boats

Human response

Lituya Bay Simulation

Blue/light Blue:

Blue water is where the water is still moving or is still effected by the avalanche

Red/Orange:

Water that has stopped moving and is no longer effected from the avalanche

There wasn't much of a response from the people of Alaska because not many people lived in the area of the Tsunami because 5 years before the lituya bay tsunami there was another tsunami and scientist said this is a Tsunami prone zone because of the high rate of earthquakes and avalanches.

Lituya bay is now mainly a fishing spot

Tsunami Waring signs

What is a Tsunami and how can they be caused

Tsunami's have many waring signs but most are hard to see.

Warning Signs:

  • when the water retracts that normal means there is a tidal or tsunami on its way
  • earthquakes
  • in some places like Singapore there have been productions of tsunami early warning systems that are placed ocean to track the water movement.
  • Some places that have frequent tsunamis have signs telling people.

A Tsunami a large body of water

that has risen above sea level and is moving at a unbelievable speed, that leaves destruction and chaos behind.

Tsunami's are usually caused by earthquakes or two Plates diverge together but on rare occasions like the lituya Bay they can be caused by avalanches resulting in deadlier tsunami's

what cause the Lituya Bay Tsunami

The Litayu bay Tsunami was a chain reaction caused by a

earthquake with a 7.7 magnitude. resulting in a

avalanche just above sea level, causing a 524m

tsunami destroying the land around it
