Death of Queen Victoria

Queen Victoria died in 1901, at the of 81. Although she died, the British still continued to rule Singapore, until 1963, when Singapore became a Union with Malaya, to form Malaysia.

Opening of the first MRT line

The first MRT line to open was the North-East line which is the purple line. Singapore started planning on making this line in 1960. And it was finally made and finished in 1982.

Formation of ASEAN

ASEAN stands for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. It was formed in 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. It was to promote political and economic cooperation and regional stability. Brunei joined in 1984 (after they became independent from the UK), Vietnam joined in 1995, Laos and Burma joined in July 1997, for ASEAN’s 30th anniversary.

The last to join was Cambodia in 1999. The ASEAN charter entered into force on the 15th December 2008. They then had a legal identity as an international organization. The ASEAN community has 3 parts. ThePolitical-Security Community, the Economic Community and the Socio-Cultural Community. The US became a dialogue partner in 1977. In 2009, President Obama came to Singapore, to hold a meeting with the ASEAN leaders.

Nationalists take power in China

Before 1827, there were 1000 inhabitants in Singapore. By the end of 1827, the population of Singapore were mostly Chinese. Until a large amount of Chinese workers started to come to Singapore from China. The Chinese started to intermarry with the local Malays after coming to Singapore which created the Peranakan people and culture.The Malay immigrants mostly came from Malacca, Penang, Riau, and other parts of the Malay Archipelago. The Indians came with the Malay, and they started to work and live in Singapore.

This event happened in the beginning of 1900 until 1930 which is a long time period. All the Chinese supported either the Chinese communist party or the Chinese nationalist party. The Malay made the Malayan communist party that supported the Chinese so that the Chinese had much more power.

Malayan independence

Britain was a part of Malaya since 1786, when the east indian company established a trading post on Penang island. On the 31st of August 1957, Malaya became the independent ‘Federation of Malaya'. Later, in August 31st 1963, Singapore and Malaya became a union, to form Malaysia.

Rapid economic growth

50 years ago, Singapore’s GDP per capita was US $320. Now, Singapore’s GDP per capita is US $60,000. This makes Singapore one of the most rapid economically growing countries. It also makes Singapor the 6th highest GDP, based on the Central Intelligence agency.

Bukit Ho Swee fire

5th May 1961, It was Hari Raya Many people were left homeless, as their homes were gone, by the fire. The central fire victim camps were in some schools down river valley road and kim seng road. Everyone was given the facilities of dining and going to the bathroom. The fire left approx. 12,000 people homeless, and Bukit Ho Swee was ruined. Homeless kids didn’t need to return to school, after the fire. Most families were reallocated to small HDB flats.

It was the first big HDB project, so this is where the HDBs started. Everyone had to start their life all over again.

Japanese invasion of China

Singapore’s political union with Malaya

Most Japanese wanted a war in China and little of them refused to. The Japanese started to invade China on September 19th 1931, which expanded the largest war. The Japanese gained control although China attacked with their Chinese soldiers. The Japanese invaded China only because they wanted to destroy communism in China.

First democratic mass elections in Singapore

Singapore changing from East India Company possession to British colony

In 1959, Singapore had their first election to choose who the chief minister will be. While this, the PAP (People's action party) won over 43 seats in the election. Lee Kuan Yew had the top votes for prime minister and so, he became the prime minister.

They became a British colony because they thought that the British has power and so Singapore has a country to look up to when they are in trouble with the country rights or not gaining independence.

On August 31st 1963 Singapore merged with Malaya to become Malaysia. But, the two sides, kept fighting, as the Malays thought that they should have more priority, as it is THEIR country, and the chinese from Singapore should have less priority, but this didn’t work out, and so... On July 18th 1967, the British announced their plans to withdraw their troops from Singapore. They said that they would probably do this by the mid 1970s. By Octomber 1971, most troops had returned to Britain, from Singapore. By 1976, all British Troops had left Singapore.

The Mayan leader asked Singapore to leave. On August 9th 1965, Singapore and Malaysia became to countries, and for the first time in many years, Singapore became an independent country. On December 22nd that year, Singapore became an officially independent republic.

Japanese surrender

The Japanese invasion of Singapore started on 15th February 1942. While the world war 2, the Japanese was the ruler of Singapore which they renamed to “Syonan.” The residents living in Singapore were dragged out of their houses while the Japanese occupied Singapore. The British re-occupied Singapore on the 5th of September 1945.

Race riots

The Japanese started to surrender Singapore in August 1945. The island was handed over to the British Military afterward, then the British re-occupied Singapore. The British were in power and in 1946, then Singapore became a crown colony.

Raffles claiming Singapore for the East India Company

These race riots were inside Singapore and Malaysia. They were between Malays and Chinese. These race riots were over two five-day periods beginning on 21 July and 2 September 1964 They began after Singapore merged with the Federation of Malaysia, they started because the Malays thought they should get more priority, whereas, Lee Kwan Yu thought that the Chinese and Malays should be treated equally. There were 22 deaths and 461 injured.

On January 29, 1819, Raffles convinced the Indian government to change Malaya and Singapore's colony under the East India company. He wanted the British and Singapore to be under a different colony.
