Epinephrine and Cortisol

What Is Epinephrine

-Epinephrine, also known as Adrenaline has the molecular formula C9H13NO3

-It was the first hormone to be founded and discovered in 1826.

-Epinephrine is located in the adrenal glands which is located on the kidneys and produced during times of stress

Cortisol

The Good

Help regulate metabolism

and control blood sugar levels.

The Bad

Cortisol is a stress hormone, produced in the adrenal cortex with a molecular formula of C21H30O5.Discovered in the 1930's

It is released in response to stress and low-glucose concentration

When used as medication it is called hydrocortisone

-Hypertension

-Insulin resistance

-High Blood sugar

-suppressed immunity

What's the Connection

Epinephrine and cortisol used in response of a threat in the environment. This fight or flight response gives organisms an advantage in surviving.

The Affects of Epinephrine

The Bad

-When adrenaline becomes addictive it causes pheochromocytoma which is a tumor produced from hormones

-

This is an example of a positive feedback loop. Once you've become addicted the system is unstable and has moved from its equilibrium state.

The Good

-Stimulates heart

-Makes body more alert and stronger

-It essentially prepares your body for times of danger

-Is used for severe asthma attacks and allergic reactions.
