Sheldon shows signs of Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD)when he finds Penny's apartment messy, he sneaks in during the night and cleans it up because he can't stand being in the same hallway with something so disastrous. He refuses to sit anywhere other than his designated spot on the couch and follows set routines. The running gag of the show is that when he knocks on Penny's door, he has to say Penny's name every three knocks.

CAUSES OF THIS BEHAVIOR?

Sheldon may have developed OCPD because of genetic reasons. Biological factors are a primary contributor to the disorder. Abnormalities in the brain and imbalance of brain chemicals, especially serotonin, may have also contributed to his OCPD.

Environmental factors probably also played a significant role, especially with growing up as a child prodigy. He was so much more intellectually mature and intelligent than his peers that he was never able to really connect with anyone his age, leaving him psychologically and emotionally weak. To consolidate, he may have begun to act on his obsessions and develop compulsions.

Compulsions: repetitive behaviors or mental acts that the person feels driven to perform in response to an obsession

The obsessions or compulsions cause marked distress, and interfere with the person's usual social activities
