Global Coffee Trade

Quick Coffee Facts

  • Coffee originated in Ethiopia and spread around the world after a shepard noticed his sheep becoming jumpy after eating coffee berries
  • After crude oil, coffee is the most sought commodity in the world
  • Worldwide, we drink over 500 billion cups of coffee every year
  • Coffee farms are the economic livelihood of over 25 million people.
  • Coffee shops are the fastest growing niche in the restaurant business
  • 90 per cent of the world's coffee production takes place in developing countries
  • In the beginning, coffee was blamed for riots, seditious speech and Satan worship

Relying on a single crop for your entire export income is a very risky thing to do considering that it means that if that single crop was destroyed then they’re export income would cease to exist. For example say that that country was located on the ring of fire and they were hit by an earthquake or tsunami and that crop was destroyed then that company would no longer earn money for exporting their goods and it would dramatically affect their financial standing if they were a main exporter.

Dangers:

Natural disaster – earthquake tsunami cyclone

Loss of employees – move to work at bigger corporations

Pest infestation – bugs

Coffee Farming

The ideal climate for growing coffee beans is in the tropics explaining why Brazil is the main exporter however mainly cold climates do not have the correct growing conditions for coffee explaining why the USA is one of the biggest importers.

Coffee Importers

Coffee Exporters

Many of the worlds top coffee importers are located in the northern hemisphere where the climate is mostly cold and not ideal for coffee bean growing conditions.

Many patterns can be seen on this map, in particular all the major exporters of coffee are located in developing countries within or just outside of the tropics.

Geographical Climates

This map shows that the main climate in the tropics, and therfore for growing coffee beans is either tropical wet and dry.
