  • It was needed for producing high quality iron.

  • he revolutionized the british iron industry with his use of grooved rollers to finish iron.
  • it replaced the process of hammering and through his invention of the puddling process.
  • the process, called puddling, involved stirring the molten pig iron in a reverbatory furnace until the decarburizing action of the air produced a loop of pure metal.
  • in 1784, Henry Cort devised a method of producing wrought iron from cast iron using a coal fired Reverberatory Furnace.
  • for the wrought iron to be made usable, it was lifted from the furnace and forged using a 'Shingling Hammer'.
  • an improvement to his puddling process came from Joseph Hall in 1816, he added mill scale.
