What Hiroshima and Nagasaki Did

In Conclusion

-Land invasion of the Japanese islands

-1 million estimated casualties if full-scale war happened

-Japanese and American casualties

Any Questions?

-Showed the world what nuclear weapons could do

-The Cold War would've used nuclear weapons

-First thermonuclear weapon, 700x stronger than atomic bombs

-World wouldn't recover from a thermonuclear war

August 6, 1945

Surrendering

Thesis

-Hiroshima and Nagasaki certainly did save lives

-Politics and the need to retain pride

-"Indeed, we declared war on America and Britain out of our sincere desire to insure Japan's self-preservation and the stabilization of East Asia.....Despite the best that has been done by everyone.... the general trends of the world have all turned against her interest."

Although the overall outcome of the war was not changed by the atomic bomb, the amount of lives lost and the weapons used in future wars, especially the Cold War, were determined by the use and creation of the atomic bomb in World War II

BUT

Atomic bomb

- Hiroshima, Nagasaki

120,000-160,000 dead instantly

200, 000 total
