A songwriter can also be known as a composer,although the latter term tends to be used mainly for individuals from the classical music genre.

Songwriters can be employed to write either the lyrics or the music directly for or alongside a preforming artist or they present songs to the A&R, Publisher, agents and managers for consideration.

Songwriters can write songs for individual musicians , record companies or advertising agencies- it depends on what they want to do with their talent.

You must know how to write lyrics,how to write melody, how to write chords and how to write your song as a lead sheet. As a songwriter and seller you must also know how to select the song to demo and how to record a compelling demo.
