  • Like other STI's, there is a higher chance in contracting chlamydia when a person has more sex partners.
  • Chlamydia is easily transmitted in sexually active teenage girls because the cervix is not yet fully developed.
  • In the States, it's estimated that 2.86 million infections occur annually; there are many unreported cases because a large number of people who are infected do not show any symptoms and therefore do not get tested.

How is

Chlamydia

Transmitted?

Anyone who is sexually active can contract chlamydia simply by engaging in sexual contact with an infected person. In addition, this disease can be transmitted via anal, vaginal, and even oral sex. Furthermore, a mother infected with chlamydia can possibly pass on chlamydia to her baby.

Long

Term

Consequences

  • a common STI caused by a bacterium that only affects humans. This type of bacteria lives and grows inside cells which is what makes it difficult to determine
  • leading bacterial STI in the world and the most prevailing STI reported in America
  • affects both men and women, but is more common with young people

Although it's possible for an infected person to be asymptomatic, there are signs in being infected with chlamydia. These symptoms may appear one to three weeks after infection and include:

  • unusual vaginal or penial discharge
  • burning sensation when urinating
  • inflammation in the rectum and the lining of the eye

Specifically for Men:

  • itch and redness of the penis opening
  • testicle pain

Specifically for Women:

  • bleeding in between periods
  • lower abdominal pain
  • infertility
  • pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women
  • scarring of the fallopian tube
  • ectopic or tubal pregnancy that can result in miscarriage or death of a mother
  • epididymitis in men
  • sterility in men

What to Do if You are Infected

  • inform anyone you recently had sex with because they may be infected as well and will require treatment
  • do not have anymore sex with anyone else to prevent any further spreading of the infection
  • chlamydia can be treated so an infected person should seek treatment right away

Diagnosis:

Chlamydia

Treatment:

Chlamydia is easily cured with antibiotics. Typical treatments of this infection include a single dose of azithromycin or taking a dose of doxycycline twice a day for a week. In addition, people infected with HIV who have chlamydia should receive similar treatment as those who don't have HIV.

Women and men who are at high risk of chlamydia should consider getting yearly screening, if not even more frequent. Chlamydia diagnosing and screening is relatively easy and includes:

  • a swab

Doctors will take a swab of discharge from a woman's cervix for antigen testing and place a slim swab into the end of a man's penis to get a sample from the urethra.

  • urine test

Men and women may hand in a sample of urine to be examined in the laboratory to check the presence of chlamydia

IN CONCLUSION:

Chlamydia is just one of the many

STI's in existence. By being sexually active, you're putting yourself at risk. So if you don't want to complicate your life by contracting this or any other STI, then refrain from having sex before marriage.
