Dominican Republic Timeline

1700's

The economy is weak in Santo Domingo but the eastern side, Saint-Domingue, becomes wealthy selling sugar.

1492

1697

Early 1500's

1496

A treaty called Ryswick was signed and the western land of the island was given to the French which later on became Haiti, while Santo Domingo was the eastern land and became Dominican Republic.

Now the Taino are being replaced by African American slaves to do labor on the island.

Christopher Columbus travels to the New World and names an island "Little Spain". He then meets the Taino Indians but they end up rebelling against him because of his exploit.

Christopher Columbus' brother, Bartholomew Columbus, creates the first European settlement in the Americas at Santo Domingo.
