Lindsay Barrett George

Author and Illustrator

First Books

In 1987, William and Boomer was published.

William, her son, befriended a Canadian goose and the goose lived with them in the log cabin.

The goose's favorite food was linguine with garlic and butter.

William and her daughter, Campbell, were drawn into many of her stories when they were young.

Pennsylvania

Moved to Pennsylvania in 1984. Lindsay and her husband lived in a log cabin on a lake.

She would walk, canoe, swim, draw, and most importantly listen to the woods.

The time in the cabin was the inspiration for the nature books that her and her husband created together.

Pets

All of her dogs have run through the pages of her books.

Lindsay now lives in an old school house built in 1898 here is Pennsylvania.

A miniature dachshund, 2 cats and a duck live with her.

Career Start

Drawing

Lindsay moved to New York City in 1977 and worked in children's publishing. On weekends, she would create her wordless picture books mostly about NYC dogs.

Lindsay's art has always been about the things that she finds interesting in her environment.

In school, she drew family and pets and friends.

She was telling stories with pictures but never realized that words would someday complement her images and make up a separate world in a book.

Moving to the USA

In 1960, Lindsay moved to New Jersey.

Spanish was her first language and it took a while for her to learn English.

Lindsay looked at fairy tales and the Little Golden Books because of the pictures even before she could read.

She never imagined that she would be writing and illustrating them as an adult.

Childhood

Lindsay was born on a Caribbean island.

She doodled animals in the sand outside her house, on the walls in her bedroom, and on the paper bags from the grocery store.

Animals were her theme then and now.

She does not ever remember not drawing.
