Poverty occurs globally. Every part of the world is affected by poverty in some way. Third world countries ( The term Third World arose during the Cold War to define countries that remained non-aligned with either NATO, or the communist bloc) are devastatingly affected by poverty.
Impoverished people are defined as those deprived of basic necessities like food, clothing, water, and shelter. they lack access to education, and employment opportunities to escape from poverty to earn the respect of society.
Racism and other prejudices can block minorities from opportunities (education & employment). For example " I wont give you that job because of the color of your skin". During times of slavery, black people did not accumulate wealth like the whites, therefor the white children (who's family accumulated wealth passed down through generations without interruption) had a large advantage in opportunities.
Poverty has various causes, while some of them can be removed by various measures, eliminating the most complicated underlying causes remains a challenge for both developed and developing nations. Some causes of poverty are war, famine, disease, fraud, racism, prejudice, overpopulation, greed, drug abuse, divorce, industrial change, theft, oppression, high medical bills, loss of job, physical and mental disabilities, immigrant status, low wage rates and teenage pregnancy.
Poverty seems to be an issue that has been present since the origination of society.
