Technology in the Renaissance and

Middle Ages

By Courtney & Muriel

Submarine

  • The first plans for a submarine were made by Leonardo Davicni. He kept his plans secret because he didn't want to makewar any more terrifying than it already was. His submarine was never actually built.
  • Later in 1578 A man named William Borne started to draw up plans for a submarine. His idea for submerging the sub was to have extra tanks that could be filled when they wanted to go under and emptied them to reach the surface. William's submarine was never built either.
  • Around 1620 a dutch inventor named Cornelis Drebbel built a row boat that was covered with leather and had oars that came out through water tight seals with oars. His submarine could go 15 feet under water, hold 12 people and stay underwater for a few hours.

The Printing Press

A big development in writing and literature was the invention of the printing press, it was invented in 1436 by a german man named John Gutienburg. Before this time saving invention, monks had to hand copy everything. This made books very hard to get and extremely expensive. The very first book to be mass produced was the Bible.

In the beginning of the Renaissance time period, we can see the first portable clocks developed in Florenece, Italy, in 1410 by the famous architect Filippo Brunelleschi. Before this time, mechanical clocks were large, fixed devices. The spring-driven clock made it possible to carry the time around with you.

The Flushing Toilet

The flush toilet was invented by Sir John Harington, a British nobleman and godson of Queen Elizabeth I. He came up with a valve that when pulled would release water from a water closet. It was recommended to flush the toilet only once or twice a day.

The Renaissance was a time of creativity and change in Europe. There were many achievements in art, literature, and science.

Cannons

  • Mohammed II requested a man named Urban Hungary to build a cannon to help him take over Constantinople.
  • Urban designed and built over 70 cannons for Mohammed.
  • The largest cannon that Urban made was called "basilica". It was made of cast iron, weighing more than 19 tons and fired a ball of about 800 tons.
  • There were some problems with Urban's cannon. The cannon was made of cast iron which is strong but very heavy. It weighed over 19 tons.
  • Another problem with his cannon was it took hours to reload. If the cannon takes hours to load, so it could shoot a maximum of 3 shots per day.
  • The barrel of the cannon wasn't very strong and it started to crack after only 2 days of use.
  • In 1453 Mohammed began firing on Constantinople.
  • Unfortunately, Urban did not live to see their success, because during the siege a rouge cannon shot killed him.

Lenses

Convex and concave lenses were first used to correct vision in about 1280, in Florence, Italy. These glasses can be seen in paintings of Pope Leo X, who was often shown wearing concave lenses to correct his near-sightedness. From the development of these lenses came development of the microscope and telescope.

Clocks, eyeglass lenses, flush toilets, cannons, the printing press, and submarines, were all invented or improved in this era.
