Monday, 27th of March, 2018

Vol LXIX, No. 969

Who was involved?

Great Britain and the Indigenous original clans from the Hawkesbury and Nepean rivers in NSW.

What happened?

Where did it take place?

The Hawkesbury and Nepean Wars (1795 - 1816) were a series of wars between Great Britain settlers and the Indigenous groups of Hawkesbury and Nepean river in New South Wales, Australia. the battle consisted of three wars. The war was extremely interesting as many of the Aboriginal nations occasionally allied themselves with the British in order to conquer more land for their tribes, and just as quickly returned to fighting against the British. The war was fought mostly with guerrilla-warfare tactics. The wars resulted in the defeat of the Hawkesbury and Nepean Indigenous clans who were consequently dispossessed of their lands.

The Hawkesbury and Nepean wars took place in New South Wales. It included the indigenous clans of the Hawksbury river and the Nepean river. They fought mainly in greater western Sydney which includes regions that are now known as Blacktown, Bankstown, Campbelltown, Fairfield, the Inner West, Penrith, and Parramatta.

How were those involved affected by the event?

Why did the event occur?

When did it take place?

It lead to the Indigenous people being evicted from their land, an increase in 'European superiority', and the deaths of thousands of Indigenous Australians families. This still affects Australia to this day, as Australians with Indigenous ancestry have less of a chance of getting a job compared to people with European ancestry.

1795-1816 was when these wars occurred, but to go into more depth, it was made up of different wars. The Pemulwuy’s War happened from 1795-1802 then followed by Tedbury’s War was from 1808-1809 and the last war was the Nepean War which developed from 1814-1816. As well as the in-between wars from 1804-1805 which was just a violence act of conflict.

European settlement of Australian land was quickly increasing and large amounts of that land was cleared for farming and other needs for the European's which ended in the result of having many aboriginal food sources gone. In the end, the Europeans won.
