Goldfish Experiment

Question

Procedure for Controlled Bowl

Does temperature affect the respiration rate of a goldfish?

Hypothesis

1. Get all materials

2. Fill bowl to the top with room temperature water

3. Put the goldfish inside each individual bowl

4. Record the amount of bubbles within a

3 minute period

5. Record this data

6. Repeat steps for the other two bowls

Graph

We hypothesize that the respiration rate of the goldfish will increase as the temperature goes up, and decrease with the colder temperature. We say this because your heart rate goes up in hotter temperatures causing there to be more oxygen flow and more carbon to be released. Colder temperatures will do the opposite.

Materials

Goals

Variables

  • Goldfish (9)
  • Water (Variety of different temperatures)
  • Fish Bowls
  • Ice
  • Hot Plate
  • Large Container
  • Thermometer

Produce for heated bowl

Independent= Warm Temperature

Dependent= Respiration rate

Controlled= Goldfish

Our goal:

  • To determine how temperature affects breathing habits

1. Get all materials

2. Fill bowl with water

3. Leave bowls on hot plate until it reaches 10 degrees Celsius hotter than the room temperature water(30)

4. Record how many bubbles are shown after 3 minutes

5. Repeat steps for the other two bowls

Procedure for Cold Water

1. Get all materials

2. Fill bowl with water

3. Fill large container with ice

4. Put the bowl into the large container until it reaches 10 degrees Celsius

5. Wait for 3 minutes and take data

6. Repeat for the two other bowls
