-Became a game and the young men would sing German Christmas carols and pantomime for their audience.

Who are the Wends?

Where is Rumpliche now? Why is he important?

Who is Rumpliche?

-Sorbs/Lusatian Serbs from East Germany in an area called Lusatia

-Speak Sorbian and retained a separate identity from the Germans that surrounded them

-Lutheran

-Immigrated to Serbin, Texas in Lee County

-Knecht Ruprecht

-Rumpliche was a frightening, stomping, mask-wearing figure who [went around to each house in a Wend town and] demanded to know who had been naughty or nice.-Joyce Bise

-Young men dressed up as Rumpliche each year and would carry a stick and an empty sack. Traveled in groups of 8-10.

-If a child was naughty they were placed into the sack and were made to recite a prayer correctly before they were let free.

-Runs around during Advent (November 27th-December 24th)

Rumpliche is dust in the wind.
