Land Degradation

Individual responsibility and action on land degradation

Link between human actions and ecological sustainability on a global scale

People should be educated on the current issue of land degradation. Once they were to have a basic understanding of the issue and various perspectives it can then help spread awareness. Talking to people in the community about issues surrounding land degradation will help others become more aware.

Be an active citizen is to become involved in your community. Learn about the various organizations and groups that share similar ideas about promoting ecological sustainability.

Ecological sustainability is the maintenance of life systems that benefits both humans and the species of animals and the land on earth. Human actions also are able to benefit them, animals and land. Both human actions and ecological sustainability on a global scale can contribute to reducing land degradation. For example, land degradation will be reduced through ecological sustainability as on farms, the technology is getting more advanced. Land degradation occurs from change of soil structure or erosion which, if the technology and equipment on farms are more advanced, it can prevent land degradation from occuring. On the other hand, human actions could also reduce land degradation in many different ways. These include reducing deforestation, preventing salinization, reducing back burning and land reclaimation. Overall, both ecological sustainability and human actions can prevent/reduce land degradation and benefits humans and animals but human actions are harder to turn around.

Location of three examples in the world.

Provide examples of strategies to encourage ecological sustainability.

examples of land degradation are; india, Pakistan, Philippines. In the Philippines, it is estimated that soil erosion carries away a volume of soil equivalent to one metre deep over 200 000 hectares every year. In India, some 144 million hectares of land are affected by either wind or water erosion. In Pakistan, 8.1 million hectares of land have been lost to wind erosion and 7.4 million hectares to water erosion.

It can be achieved partially through the use of the precautionary principle, if there are threats of serious or irreversible environmental damage, lack of full scientific certainty should not be used as a reason for postponing measures to prevent environmental degradation. Also important is the principle of inter generational equity, the present generation should ensure that the health, diversity and productivity of the environment is maintained or enhanced for the benefit of future generations.

Government Responsibility and Action

The issue

The issue we will be addressing is Land Degradation. Land degradation is a process in which the environment is affected by humans, humans could back burn the land, loop the trees etc.

The Federal Government in many countries are/can be responsible for Land Degradation as some federal government agencies need to use local government agencies to build framework for the best thing that suits that particular community. They should also take into consideration the public's and tourist's interest in order to prevent land degradation. The actions that governments around the world have made include that the Rio Declaration on environment has provided suggestions for promoting sustainability. Additionally, the statement of principles for sustainable management of forests promoted and clearly stated how important it is for government to act on the sustainable development of land.
